Fire Protection Onboard Ships: Equipment, Service Scope and Survey Preparation

A request for “fire protection onboard” can mean anything from a few portable extinguishers to a fixed fire-extinguishing system that needs planned inspection. For a vessel manager, superintendent or procurement team, the first job is to turn that broad phrase into a clear equipment and service list. That makes quotations comparable and reduces the chance of a last-minute surprise during a port call.

What does fire protection onboard a ship include?

Ship fire safety is built around prevention, detection, containment, suppression and safe response by the crew. The exact arrangement varies by vessel, but a commercial service list may include portable or wheeled extinguishers, fixed CO₂ or other approved systems, foam or dry-powder equipment, hoses and nozzles, breathing apparatus and associated alarms or release arrangements.

This is why “fire safety on ships” is not one product category. The system installed in an engine room is managed differently from a portable extinguisher, and breathing equipment has its own inspection and service needs.

Start with the vessel’s actual equipment list

Before asking for a quotation, collect the equipment list, recent service certificates, maker information and any outstanding survey observation. If a fixed system is involved, system drawings and cylinder or agent details can be useful. For portable equipment, record type, capacity and quantity. Where labels are difficult to read, photographs usually help more than a guessed description.

Portable equipment and fixed systems should not be quoted as one generic scope

Fixed systems involve a wider installation: cylinders or tanks, valves, manifolds, release arrangements, distribution components and associated controls. A quotation that simply says “FFA service” can therefore hide important differences in scope.

When procurement compares offers, check what is included, what is conditional on inspection and what documentation is expected at completion. A lower headline price can become more expensive if the quotation excludes transport, refilling, replacement items or system work that another quotation includes.

What usually causes delays during a vessel call?

Common delays include missing maker information, unclear system drawings, late disclosure of a survey deadline, equipment that needs workshop work when the sailing window is short, and defects that were not mentioned in the RFQ. Sending the list early gives the service team time to identify likely parts, tools and logistics.

Survey preparation is mainly about evidence and readiness

Before a survey, confirm that equipment due dates, service records and vessel documentation agree. If a deficiency has already been raised, share it with the service provider rather than asking for a generic “annual service”. The service scope should respond to the actual equipment and the current controlled requirement.
