SCBA Servicing Checklist for Vessel Managers: What to Send Before Attendance

A request for SCBA servicing in India is easier to price and schedule when the service provider receives enough equipment information before the vessel arrives. A short message saying “service SCBA” often leads to several rounds of clarification and can delay a commercial response.

Identify the Equipment

Share the SCBA make, model, quantity and cylinder details. Photographs of the identification plate, cylinder markings and overall equipment can be useful when documentation is not immediately available.

Describe the Required Scope

State whether the requirement is routine inspection, functional servicing, defect investigation, component replacement, cylinder-related work or a broader onboard breathing-apparatus service. If a previous service report identifies defects, attach it to the enquiry.

Provide Vessel and Port Information

For ship attendance, include vessel name, port, expected arrival/departure window and the date by which work must be completed. This lets the service team check whether workshop work, spare parts or transport must be planned in advance.

Include Documentation Requirements

If the purchaser, flag, class or internal safety system requires specific documentation, mention it before the job is quoted. Commercial and technical teams can then review whether the requested scope and documentation are available for the equipment concerned.

Combine Related Safety Work

Where a vessel also needs FFA servicing, LSA support or liferaft work, include these requirements in the same enquiry. Dipti Fire Services can review the consolidated requirement against the vessel’s port schedule.

Do Not Mix Pre-Use Checks with Workshop Servicing

A crew pre-use inspection, a planned functional check and a workshop service are not the same activity. The vessel’s safety-management system and the equipment manufacturer should define what the user checks before use and what must be completed by competent service personnel. When requesting a quotation, state which level of work is required rather than simply asking for “SCBA checking”.

When a Service Quote May Need to Stay Conditional

Some defects are not visible until the set is inspected or dismantled according to the maker’s procedure. A transparent quote should identify what is included and explain how additional defective parts will be reported and authorised. This protects the vessel from unexpected cost and prevents a technician from replacing parts without commercial approval.

SCBA Servicing FAQs

Should I send the previous SCBA service certificate?

Yes. It can help identify the equipment, service history and previous findings.

Can all SCBA faults be diagnosed from photographs?

No. Photos are useful for identification and visible damage, but functional faults may require controlled inspection and testing.

Before You Issue the Purchase Order

Check the offered SCBA against the vessel or site requirement rather than relying on the product name alone. Confirm the cylinder configuration, included accessories, applicable approval, delivery location and after-sales arrangement. If the purchase is replacing an existing set, include the current make/model in the comparison so the effect on spares and familiarisation is understood.

A technical clarification before the PO is easier to manage than a rejected item at the vessel. Keep the supplier’s product document, quotation assumptions and applicable approval with the purchasing record.

Safety note: SCBA selection and maintenance should follow the applicable maker instructions, equipment requirements and current vessel/industrial safety rules. A commercial article cannot replace equipment-specific instructions.

Technical context: safety and servicing requirements can vary by equipment, maker, vessel, flag, class and current regulation. Verify the requirement that applies to the specific job before acting on a general article.
